Ancient Nara or
Heijokyô was built on the northern edge of the Nara Basin as
Japan´s new capital in 710 A.D. The streets were laid out in a
grid pattern. The city was filled with houses, temples and markets, and
had a population of 100 - 200,000. Nara Palace was located in the
north-central part of the city and extended 1 km north and south and
1,3 km east and west. It was the heart of the city and included the
imperial domicile, government offices and other facilities. In 784, the
Emperor Kanmu moved the capital from Heijô to Nagaoka-kyô.
