Edo,
the former name of Tôkyô, was derived from Edo Shigenaga, a
rising influential figure who acquired this area as a feudal fief
at the beginning of 12th century. Edo-jô castle was founded by
Ôta Dôkan at the site of the present day imperial palace.
In 1590, Edo castle came under the control of the Edo Shogunate
established by Tokugawa
Ieyasu. Tokugawa redesigned the city with Edo castle strategically
located in the center. From then on, Edo City served as the
administrative center of the nation for a period spanning 250 years.
